ForgeMRP vs. JobBOSS²: Which Is Right for Your Job Shop?

ForgeMRP vs. JobBOSS²: Which Is Right for Your Job Shop?

If you're shopping for MRP software for your job shop, JobBOSS² (by ECI Software Solutions) is probably on your list. It's been around for decades and has a large install base in the machining world.

ForgeMRP is newer. We built it specifically for small and mid-size job shops that want modern, cloud-native software without the complexity and cost of legacy ERP systems.

This comparison is honest. We'll tell you where ForgeMRP excels, where JobBOSS² has advantages, and — most importantly — which type of shop each tool is best suited for. We'd rather you pick the right tool for your situation than sell you something that doesn't fit.

Quick Comparison

| Feature | ForgeMRP | JobBOSS² | |---------|----------|----------| | Deployment | Cloud (browser-based) | Cloud or on-premise | | Implementation time | Under 3 hours (self-serve) | 2–6 weeks (with consultant) | | Pricing | $299/month, all features included | Custom pricing, typically $500–1,500+/month | | Quoting | Built-in with AI drawing analysis | Built-in, manual entry | | Scheduling | Drag-and-drop production board | Gantt-based scheduling | | Purchasing | RFQ → PO with supplier portal | PO management, no supplier portal | | Inventory | Material tracking with sourcing modes | Full inventory management | | Accounting integration | Planned | QuickBooks, Sage, others | | Industry compliance (AS9100, ITAR) | Not yet | Supported | | Mobile access | Yes (responsive web) | Limited | | Training required | Minimal — learnable in a day | Multi-day training typical |

Quoting

ForgeMRP

Quoting is the core of ForgeMRP. Every quote breaks down into parts, and each part has:

  • Materials — four sourcing modes (inventory, saw-cut, standard stock, custom) with automatic cost calculation based on material type, shape, and dimensions.
  • Internal operations — programming, setup, and cycle time with per-unit and per-batch costing. Each operation is tied to a specific machine, so your shop rates are applied automatically.
  • Outside operations — subcontracted work with shipping costs.
  • Purchased items — hardware, fasteners, or other buy-items.

Markup is applied at the material, operation, and item level. Tax calculation is automatic (GST/PST/HST by Canadian region, configurable for US shops). One-click PDF generation and email delivery.

The AI-powered drawing analysis feature is unique: upload a customer drawing (PDF), and ForgeMRP extracts part specifications — material, dimensions, tolerances, and features — to pre-populate the quote. It's not perfect for every drawing, but for standard machined parts it saves significant data entry time.

JobBOSS²

JobBOSS² has a mature quoting module with estimating features that have been refined over many years. It supports material, labor, and overhead calculations with configurable cost centers.

Where JobBOSS² has an edge:

  • Deeper cost center configuration — more granular control over how overhead and burden rates are allocated.
  • Historical quoting data — shops that have used JobBOSS for years have a deep library of past estimates to reference.

Where it falls short:

  • Manual data entry — no AI-assisted drawing analysis. Every field is entered by hand.
  • UI complexity — the interface reflects its Windows-era heritage. New users report a steep learning curve for the quoting module specifically.

Verdict: ForgeMRP is faster for shops that value speed and simplicity in quoting. JobBOSS² offers more granular cost configuration for shops with complex overhead structures.

Scheduling and Production

ForgeMRP

ForgeMRP's production board is a visual, drag-and-drop interface organized by equipment. Each column represents a machine or work center, and jobs flow through as cards that can be dragged to reschedule.

Features include:

  • Work orders assigned to specific machines with phase tracking (programming → setup → running)
  • Filter by status, machine, customer, or due date
  • List view and Gantt view alternatives
  • Operator view that auto-filters to the logged-in user's assigned work

The scheduling approach is practical and hands-on — you see the shop floor at a glance and rearrange work in seconds.

JobBOSS²

JobBOSS² uses a more traditional Gantt-based scheduling approach with capacity planning tools. For shops that need detailed finite scheduling (accounting for machine availability, operator skills, and tooling constraints), JobBOSS² has deeper scheduling logic.

Where JobBOSS² has an edge:

  • Finite capacity scheduling — can model machine availability, shift patterns, and concurrent operations more precisely.
  • What-if analysis — simulate the impact of adding a rush job or losing a machine.

Where it falls short:

  • Complexity — many shops report that the scheduling module is powerful but difficult to set up and maintain. The gap between "what the software can do" and "what our shop actually uses" is wide.
  • Drag-and-drop — limited compared to ForgeMRP's visual board.

Verdict: JobBOSS² has more powerful scheduling algorithms. ForgeMRP has a more usable day-to-day scheduling interface. If your shop needs finite capacity scheduling with shift modeling, JobBOSS² is stronger. If your scheduling bottleneck is visibility and ease of rearranging work, ForgeMRP is faster.

Purchasing

ForgeMRP

ForgeMRP has a complete purchasing workflow:

  1. RFQ creation — select materials or items you need to buy, choose which suppliers to send to.
  2. Supplier portal — suppliers receive an email link, view the RFQ, and submit pricing directly. No account creation required.
  3. Response comparison — side-by-side view of supplier responses to choose the best option.
  4. PO generation — convert the winning RFQ response into a purchase order with one click.
  5. Receiving — track partial and full deliveries against POs.
  6. Requirements dashboard — see all pending purchase requirements, active POs, and overdue items in one view.

The supplier portal is a significant differentiator. Suppliers respond through a simple web form instead of emailing quotes back and forth. This eliminates the manual data entry of transcribing supplier responses into the system.

JobBOSS²

JobBOSS² handles purchase orders and receiving but lacks a supplier-facing portal. The RFQ process is more manual — you generate RFQ documents, email them to suppliers, then manually enter responses.

Verdict: ForgeMRP's purchasing workflow is more streamlined, particularly for shops that request quotes from multiple suppliers regularly. The supplier portal alone saves hours per week for active purchasers.

Pricing and Implementation

This is where the differences are sharpest.

ForgeMRP

  • $299/month for early-access members (founder pricing, locked for life).
  • All features included — no module gating, no per-user charges, no add-on fees.
  • Self-serve onboarding — set up your company, configure your processes and equipment, and create your first quote in under 3 hours.
  • No implementation consultant required.
  • No long-term contract — cancel anytime.

JobBOSS²

  • Custom pricing — ECI doesn't publish prices. Based on industry reports and user forums, expect $500–1,500+/month depending on modules and user count.
  • Per-user licensing — costs scale with your team size.
  • Implementation fees — typically $5,000–$15,000+ for initial setup, configuration, and training.
  • Training required — multi-day training sessions for admin, quoting, scheduling, and shop floor modules.
  • Annual contracts — standard.

The total first-year cost difference is substantial:

| | ForgeMRP | JobBOSS² (estimate) | |---|----------|---------------------| | Software (Year 1) | $3,588 | $6,000–$18,000 | | Implementation | $0 | $5,000–$15,000 | | Training | $0 | $2,000–$5,000 | | Total Year 1 | $3,588 | $13,000–$38,000 |

Verdict: ForgeMRP is significantly less expensive and faster to deploy. JobBOSS² costs more but includes implementation support and training — which some shops value, particularly those with limited IT resources.

Where JobBOSS² Wins

We said this would be honest, so here's where JobBOSS² has clear advantages:

Industry Compliance

If your shop requires AS9100 (aerospace quality), ITAR (defense export controls), or ISO 13485 (medical devices), JobBOSS² has compliance features built in — document control, traceability, lot tracking, and audit trails designed for these standards.

ForgeMRP does not currently support these compliance frameworks. If compliance is a requirement, not a nice-to-have, JobBOSS² (or ProShop, another compliance-focused option) is the better choice today.

Accounting Integration

JobBOSS² integrates with QuickBooks, Sage, and other accounting systems. ForgeMRP's accounting integrations are planned but not yet available.

If you need your MRP system to sync invoices, AP, and AR with your accounting software, JobBOSS² has this today.

Mature Ecosystem

JobBOSS has been in the market for 25+ years. There's a large user community, a network of consultants and resellers, and extensive documentation. If you want a system with a proven track record and a support ecosystem around it, that maturity has real value.

Deeper Modules

JobBOSS² has modules for shipping, time tracking, employee management, and other functions that ForgeMRP doesn't cover yet. For shops that want a single system to handle everything from quote to invoice, JobBOSS² is closer to that all-in-one vision.

Where ForgeMRP Wins

Speed and Simplicity

ForgeMRP is designed for shop owners and operators who don't have time for a 6-week implementation project. You can be creating quotes on day one. The interface is modern and intuitive — if you can use a web browser, you can use ForgeMRP.

JobBOSS² users frequently report that the software is powerful but underutilized. Many shops pay for features they never configure because the learning curve is too steep.

Modern Technology

ForgeMRP is cloud-native, built on modern web technology. It works on any device with a browser — desktop, tablet, or phone. Updates are automatic. There's nothing to install, no server to maintain, no Windows dependency.

JobBOSS² has a cloud option, but its architecture carries the weight of its Windows desktop heritage. The user interface, while functional, feels dated compared to modern web applications.

AI-Powered Features

ForgeMRP's AI drawing analysis and intelligent assistant are capabilities that legacy software simply doesn't have. As AI continues to improve, cloud-native software can integrate these advances faster than desktop-era architectures.

Transparent Pricing

$299/month. All features. No hidden fees. No multi-year contract. No sales call required.

In an industry where "contact us for pricing" is the norm, transparency matters. You know exactly what you're paying before you commit.

Which One Should You Choose?

Choose JobBOSS² if:

  • Your shop requires AS9100, ITAR, or medical device compliance
  • You need deep accounting integration (QuickBooks/Sage sync) today
  • You want finite capacity scheduling with shift modeling
  • You prefer working with an implementation consultant
  • You have 50+ employees and need advanced HR/time tracking modules
  • You value a mature product with a 25-year track record

Choose ForgeMRP if:

  • You're a small to mid-size job shop (5–50 employees) focused on quoting, production, and purchasing
  • You want to be up and running in hours, not weeks
  • You value a clean, modern interface that your team will actually use
  • Budget matters — you want predictable, transparent pricing
  • You want AI-powered features (drawing analysis, intelligent assistant)
  • You work with multiple suppliers and want a streamlined RFQ/PO workflow
  • You're comfortable with a newer product that ships improvements frequently

The Overlap

Both tools handle the core MRP workflow: quote → job → schedule → purchase → produce → ship. For a standard commercial job shop without compliance requirements, either tool can work.

The real question is: do you want a mature, feature-dense system that requires significant investment to set up and learn? Or do you want a focused, modern tool that covers the core workflow and gets out of your way?

Neither answer is wrong. It depends on your shop, your team, and your priorities.
