Moving a PO Line to Another Job
Sometimes material is bought for one job but ends up being used on another. A common case: you quote the same part twice, make a job from each quote, then cancel the first job. The bars received on the first job's PO don't count for the second job until you move the line.
Moving a line makes it order a material or purchased item of the other job instead. Everything already received on the line, and the line's cost, go with it.
Prerequisites
- Permission to edit purchase orders
- A PO that isn't cancelled
- A line that orders a job's material or purchased item (lines you typed in by hand, such as freight, aren't linked to a job and can't be moved)
- An active job that needs the same kind of item (a material for a material line, a purchased item for a purchased-item line)
Moving a Line
- Open the PO from Purchasing > Purchase Orders.
- In the Line Items section, find the line and click Move to another job under its description.
- The dialog shows which job the line is on now. Pick the Target job.
- Pick the material (or purchased item) on that job that this line should order.
- Read the note under the choices: it tells you that the line's cost moves from the current job to the target job.
- If something was already received on the line, check the box confirming that both jobs' costs change. The Move line button stays disabled until you do.
- Click Move line.
What Changes
- Receiving: the quantity received on the line now counts for the target job. Its material shows as received on the job page and on the production board.
- Cost: the job's actual cost comes from its PO lines, so the line's total leaves the old job and is added to the target job.
- ETA: both jobs' ETAs are recalculated. If the moved line covers what the target job needed, its bottleneck stops asking you to order it.
- The PO's job link: when every line on the PO now belongs to the target job, the PO is linked to that job. If the PO still has lines for other jobs, it keeps its current job link.
- Activity: the PO's Activity section records the move and who made it, with a note naming both jobs ("Moved from J-00004 to J-00005").
Watch for duplicate orders. If the target job's material is already on another purchase order (for example a draft you created before noticing the mix-up), the dialog names that PO and links to it. After the move, both orders count toward the job's cost. Open the other PO and cancel or delete it if you no longer need it.
When a Line Can't Be Moved
Forge refuses the move and tells you why when:
- The material was combined with other parts on the RFQ. The line's price is then one part's share of a single lot, so it can't be moved on its own.
- What was received went into inventory. A PO that isn't linked to a job sends received items to inventory. Allocate those items from inventory instead of moving the line.
- The target job isn't active (ready to ship, shipped, completed or cancelled).
- The line is already on that job.
